What Does HBCU Mean and Why Do They Exist?
HBCU is an acronym for Historically Black Colleges and Universities. These institutions were created in the early 1900's for African American students who were denied admission into "white" colleges. Although discrimination laws have changed, HBCUs continue to exist today to offer students an affordable and culturally rich experience in higher education.

​How Many Black Colleges Are There, and Where Are They?
There are approximately 101 Black colleges that are located all over the United States. Most of them are on the east coast, and in the south. However, there are several in the midwest and a few on the west coast.
​
​How Does Corporate America Feel About HBCUs?
Many companies love the concept of HBCUs because it allows them to target their marketing and recruiting campaigns to the best of African American talent. Some of the biggest supporters are Wal-Mart, Nissan, Alltel, Verizon, and more.

​What Are Some Other HBCU Resources?

​Black College Expo - a free college fair that tours urban cities to encourage students to attend Black colleges. It also features workshops, celebrity appearances, and a scholarship.

​Black College Wire - a news service promoting the journalistic work of students at predominantly Black colleges and universities.

​CIAA - an athletic conference consisting of ten historically African-American institutions of higher education

​Online Degrees - find the largest selection of online degree programs from accredited colleges

​HBCUconnect.com - social networking platform, resource, and career center for Black college students and alumni. This site also offers advertisers a viable way to market to the HBCU demographic.

​Thurgood Marshall Fund - The premier organization in Black Higher Education that develops and prepares a new generation of leaders by providing resources, opportunities and advocacy to Public Historically Black Colleges & Universities, students and alumni.

​United Negro College Fund - administers scholarships and internships to African American students who attend Black colleges

​White House Initiatives on HBCUs - Federal government program designed to strengthen the capacity of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) to provide excellence in education.
